Why bother with COinS?

You will notice 'Find it @ DMU' buttons among the search results of the main databases to which De Montfort University has access. The service helps to link you through to the content of academic articles where this is possible or to identify alternatives, like printed journals in the library, or the Inter Library Loans service.

There are other sites which point you to academic resources, but because you have not been asked to login, these sites do not know how to point you to the 'Find it @ DMU' service.

What are COinS?

Some sites have tried to get round this problem by implementing COinS, a method to embed citation information into HTML code in a way that people generally can't see, but browsers can use. for example:

<span
   class="Z3988"
   title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3A
          journal&rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Focoins.info%3Agenerator&
          rft.genre=article&rft.title=Hepatology&rft.stitle=Hepatology&
          rft.issn=0270-9139&rft.eissn=1527-3350&rft.date=2004&
          rft.volume=40&rft.issue=4&rft.spage=771&rft.aulast=Alter&
          rft.aufirst=&rft.au=Alter&rft_id=info:doi/10.1002%2Fhep.20441>
   (Insert Default Text Here)
</span>

A COinS Generator can be used to add COinS to your own pages.

How to get COinS working with Firefox

Download the Firefox version of the OpenURL Referer from OCLC Openly Informatics. After installation, you will be asked to restart Firefox. This will close and re-open all your browser windows.

Please note: If the download does not start automatically after clicking the link, you probably need to add "www.openly.com" to the list of sites from which downloads are allowed. To do so, please select the "Allow" button from the yellow banner at the top of your Firefox window.

By default, the OpenURL Referrer directs all OpenURL requests to the WorldCat Registry, but you may configure the browser extension by editing the following settings under the extensions preferences:
(Tools->Add-ons->Extensions->OpenURL Referrer->Preferences)

Link Server Base URL: http://openurl.ac.uk/athens:dmu/

OpenURL version: 1.0

Image location: http://openurl.ac.uk/button/athens:dmu/

How to get COinS working with Internet Explorer

Download the IE version of the OpenURL Referer from OCLC Openly Informatics. Launch the application "openurlref.exe" and restart your browser.

By default, the OpenURL Referrer directs all OpenURL requests to the WorldCat Registry, but you may configure the browser extension by editing following settings in "C:\Program Files\OpenURL Referrer\openurlref.htm":

[...]
    var baseurl = "http://openurl.ac.uk/athens:dmu/";
    var button = "http://openurl.ac.uk/button/athens:dmu/";
    var alttext = "Find It @ DMU";
[...]

After the installation is completed, you will find a new entry called "Insert OpenURLs" in the "Tools" as well as the context menu. Selecting this command will replace all COinS stored in the code of the HTML document currently loaded by an OpenURL link.
