Students can borrow material from any of the libraries in the DMU network.
Loan periods and renewals
Normal loans | 3 weeks | May be renewed online or in person if not requested by another reader. |
Reserved items | 7 days | It is not possible to renew Reserved items. |
Short loans | Hours vary. | It is not possible to renew Short Loans. Any items borrowed must be returned. |
Note: all items borrowed on your card are your responsibility, therefore do not lend your card or any borrowed library items to anyone else.

How to renew your loans
You can extend the loan period for the items borrowed from the Library using the "My Account" section of the Library catalogue. You will be asked for your ID number and a Personal Identification Number (PIN). This PIN has been sent to your student email account. You can request a PIN of your choice if you need to.
Reference and other non-loanable items
The following items cannot be borrowed from the library:
- periodicals,
- reference works,
- company and annual reports,
- theses,
- computer software (special rules apply here, please ask at the Kimberlin Library Help and Welcome Desk)
Returning items
Normal loans
Can be returned to any DMU library.
Short loan items
Can be returned to the loaning library only.
Lost items
If you misplace or lose an item you will be asked to pay for it at the current replacement cost plus a sum to cover administration.
Fine rates
Normal Loan | 25p per day (max £15) |
Short Loan | 70p per part hour (max £15) |
Laptop Loan | £1 per part half hour (max £30) |
Fines are charged for the late return of any items and borrowing rights will be suspended until these are cleared.
If at the end of your course there are items still on loan, your degree classification and parchment may be withheld until settlement.
Library Fines Exception Policy
Fines incurred from overdue items will normally only be waived in line with the circumstances described in our library fines exceptions policy. All items are subject to recall when reserved by another borrower, and due dates will automatically be amended to reflect this. If you feel your circumstances match those within the policy, then please ask at Kimberlin Library or contact us to discuss waiving fines.
